......

"Excuse me sir, my name is Maria, would you mind if I joined you? I am new here. Do you know this place well?"
"Yes, please join me. Allow me to introduce myself. I am Luis Perez."

"You look sad, Luis."

"Ah Senorita Maria, I remember times past, and it saddens me, yes."

"Before the dictator came, we were prosperous and happy"

" I was born here and my parents forced to flee when El Presidente took over. They lost everything but their lives."

" El Presidente and his cohorts were ruthless and freedom was squashed."

"When I grew to adulthood, I joined those that wished to return my birthplace to freedom, planning for the day when we would wrest control from the dictator."

" I was strong...we were strong..surely we would succeed. The invasion was set and we were ready."

"But we were betrayed, and those who would have aided us, were brutally silenced."

" My friends, my companions in this bold venture, were killed or captured, never to be heard from again."

" Only by sure determination and the blessings of our Lord did I survive."

" I still mourn those brave men, their lives cut short when our liberation failed. My friends deaths seem senseless now, like the autumn leaves that follow summer, their memories and bravery cast to the wind."

"Perhaps, Luis, those sacrifices were not in vain, for the spring follows the frost, and some seeds take many years to sprout."

"That is my prayer, Senorita Maria, that the sacrifice of those brave men, be not forever lost."

This is a tribute to a real man, Luis Perez, whose story is reflected in our tale. Luis was by birth Cuban and returned to the Isle in the infamous Bay of Pigs invasion. After landing on the beach it became rapidly apparent that the support of the United States, which had planned the invasion but then grew timid in its implementation, had disappeared. Luis and his fellow liberators struggled to survive, but few did. Swimming nearly three miles to a waiting ship, he was rescued and lived to become a father and grandfather, never again seeing the place of his birth. He never forgot his love for his native country and this is a recognition to a wonderful human being, who valued freedom above all else.
