This is a tribute to a real man, Luis Perez, whose story is reflected in our tale. Luis was by birth Cuban and returned to the Isle in the infamous Bay of Pigs invasion. After landing on the beach it became rapidly apparent that the support of the United States, which had planned the invasion but then grew timid in its implementation, had disappeared. Luis and his fellow liberators struggled to survive, but few did. Swimming nearly three miles to a waiting ship, he was rescued and lived to become a father and grandfather, never again seeing the place of his birth. He never forgot his love for his native country and this is a recognition to a wonderful human being, who valued freedom above all else.
