Koinup

What is Koinup?

Koinup is the first social network to share virtual lives, screenshots, machinima and virtual stories. It allows users to upload, share and review content they create within games, mmorpg, virtual worlds and metaverse. Here are some examples of these contents:
.Video and movies made within virtual environments (such as machinima, demos and tutorials)
.User created virtual objects (i.e. customized furniture, 3d objects, skins, maps)
.Customized avatars
.Picture and screenshots took within games and virtual worlds
.Storyboard and stories inspired by the user's virtual life in world as Second Life and many others

Koinup provides you several tools and media to share, review, organize and optimize these contents, while offering a great chance to show creations and obtain feedback from the community

How does it work?

Koinup is a social network based on user-generated content. It's for users who want to share their work with others users. It allows its members to upload their work and it encourages them to review or comment on other members’ work. From a general point of view Koinup is similar to other social networks. But it is also unique, because it focuses only on culture created in virtual environments as games/mmorpg/3dworld.

What is the mission of Koinup?

The mission of Koinup is to allow virtual worlds and metaverse users to share their creations in a suitable place, to get feedback from the community and socialize with other members. Koinup is the ideal place to share your virtual experiences and creativity. It's the ideal place to share your other identities.

Why you call the website Koinup?

Koinup is a derivation of Koinè. Koinè is a term that ancient Greeks used to suggest a sort of esperanto they use to speach with foreign people. We at Koinup think that virtual worlds, games and metaverse are becoming the new esperanto. They allow people to socialize, communicate and express themselves, beyond nationalities, regions and countries. So we coined the term Koinup, which is the up-grade of Koinè. Koinup is the place where users could share their "other" lives and the creations they made in virtual environments.

How much does Koinup cost?

Koinup is 100% free. Anyone can enjoy the platform for free. Registered users can use several Koinup features (upload works, write comments, send messages, add tags) free of charge.

Do I need  any software to download?

A great quantity of them are story-based videos (shorts, series, music-videos, etc). They are called machinima.

What is machinima?

Machinima is a new form of film-making that uses computer games technology to shoot films in the virtual reality of a game engine. Machinima creators act out their movies within a computer game. They treat the viewpoint of the game as a camera and they shoot film in the virtual environments of games, 3dworld and mmorpg.
Machinima is a form of emergent gameplay, which is the creative use of a videogame and mmorpg in ways unexpected by the game designer's original intent. Machinima is a big trend in game culture. Several thousands of gamers shoot animated stories inside videogame worlds. There are a lot of vivacious machinima and movies sceneson the world wide web.

What do I need to make a machinima movie?

You don't need any special equipment to make machinima movies. All you need are games and/or mmorpg such as The Sims 2, Half-Life 2, Second Life, World of Warcraft or many others.

What is storyboard?

The storyboard media is a powerful tool we have created specifically for our members. The media storyboard allows users to mix images and text and convey their stories in a rich and easy format. Storyboard is for users who have long stories to tell. It's very easy to use and it allow to anyone who have some ideas to tell stories. It's something in the middle between pictures and videos. Pictures are very powerfull tool but they don't provide our members the chance to tell stories. Videos on the contrary are very difficult to use. Only a few user create cool movies or machinima. Storyboard is the synthesis of them, because it's a very easy but at the same time it's very powerfull tool to create stories.

When do you suggest me to use the storyboard media instead of pictures?

Storyboard could be used by authors who like to create comic-like stories inspired by their virtual lives.
It also could be used by authors who want to create and share tutorials. Think of Second Life users who want to share information about how they builded a particular object or piece of architecture.
Storyboard is also a powerful tool for machinima creators who want to create and/or share storyboards and mockups of their movies.
Virtual photographers could use storyboard when they want take several shots of an object (from several point of view)
Movies Directors can create storyboards before making movies. A storyboard helps them to visualize the story or to adapt a narrative for a movie. Our Koinup members can use the Storyboard media to sketch out storyboards for their upcoming movies, or they can use it to write screenplays/storyboards for other users, within collaborative projects.

How can I upload the Storyboard?

It's very easy. At first you have to select the first frame of storyboard and add some text for it (take care that you could add the text lately, for example you could add the text once you have uploaded the whole story). Once uploaded the first frame, you can add other frames. To do it, click the phrase "add other framea" below the first image of the Storyboard. When you click on "add other frames" a pop-up windows appear and you will select other frames (you can add 5 frames at a time) . If your Storyboard is longer than 6 frames, repeat this procedure twice, or more times.....

Can you give me some tips to create Storyboard?

Yes, we have. At first, we suggest you to select the images you like to use in the storyboard in you PC. Give them a unique number (1, 2, 3, 4, ...), so you can browse and upload them in the right order. Then, take care that you can add the words while uploading or lately. We suggest you to add the words, lately. Before adding the words, have a look to the images sequence, try to figure if the sequence work and if it works, finally add a text for any image.

How many images can I insert into any storyboard?

Free account users can create storyboard files up to 30 images long.

I'm going to create some comics like pages. Where and how do I have to upload them?

It depends. If you like to put the text inside the images as embedded speech balloons, we suggest you upload your work in the picture media. If, instead, you like to separate the images from the text, we suggest you upload your comics like story in the storyboard media. Storyboard media has the advantage that with any upload you can post several images and texts.

Tags & Skills

What are tags?

Tags are labels you can assign to your works (videos, pictures, storyboards) that help you organize and remember them. Tags are not hierarchic keywords. You can assign as many tags to an item as you like. You can delete the tags later, too. You can use tags to describe the location, the idea, the people, the content, or the tools you used or refer to in your work. Tagging is a more flexible system of organization than preconceived categories or folders.
Here's a list of the most popular tags in Koinup.

Why do you require I insert tag while uploading my works?

We require you insert tag for your works, because we think tags help users very much to find, recover and organize works. Tags allow users to find unexpected patches within the archive of works. We think that tags could improve Koinup's usabilitynot only for registered user, but also for any viewers. We suggest you to use more than one tag for each item. Tags are descriptions. So, the more tags you use, the more understandable your work will be. Remember that tags are only useful if they are relevant.

What about tag fraud and what do you think about it?

Tag fraud is when a member uses popular but irrelevant keywords to describe their items in order to draw more traffic. This activity is not allowed on Koinup and we reserve the right to remove any non-relevant tags. Tag fraud makes it difficult for viewers to find the works they are looking for and diminishes the Koinup experience for everyone.

What is social tagging?

Social tagging is a tool that allows Koinup members to add tags to works uploaded by other members.
If you find an interesting work, or if you think that the creator has not managed to identify precisely what his or her work means, you can add your tags to it. This is likely to improve recognition of a work and add other viewpoints, beside that of the creator.
We think that the most important use of social tagging is to increase the awareness of a work. For example, if you find a work created in another language you can add tags in your language so the work will become recognizable for people from your country, too.

I don't like social tags, can I decline them?

Yes, don't worry. While uploading your work, you can choose to allow social tags or not. If you don't allow them, nobody will be able to add tags to your work. If you do decide to allow social tags, you are still able to delete them, once received, if you think they are irrelevant or otherwise inappropriate.

I have allowed other members to add social tags to my works. Where I can check if there is any new tag added to my items?

You can check them in the "recent activity on you" page and obviously you can check them in the works pages.

I'd like to add a social tag, but I don't want others to identify me. What can I do?

Social tagging is not anonymous. If you add a social tag, other users recognize your profile. They can give you feedback related to this. Don't forget that social tagging is for connecting people, not to isolate them.

Can I delete my social tags?

Yes, obviously. You can always delete the tags you post in Koinup. It doesn't matter if they are social or not.

What happens if I write the same tag in capital and in lowercase letter?

It doesn't matter. Koinup takes it as always being the same tag.

What is the tag cloud?

The tag cloud is a visual depiction of tags used within a website. More frequently-used tags are depicted in a larger font or otherwise emphasized, while the less frequently-used tags are depicted in a smaller one. You can browse Koinup by tags. For example, you can select the most frequent tags to see Koinup trends. But you can also see the tag cloud for any user.

Copyright

Does Koinup support copyright laws?

Yes, of course. We support copyright laws and we ask our members to do the same. We will promptly take down any uploaded contents that we suspect infringes copyright laws and we also strongly recommend our members only to upload works they own or which they have the right to use. For more info upon our copyright policy give a look here.

I found a nice work on the web, can I upload it to Koinup?

As we have stated in our Guidelines, in the Copyright Notice and in these FAQs, we strongly advise our users only to upload works that they have created themselves. Before uploading a work that you have not created yourself, always ask the original creator for authorization to use it, or check if the license allows others to share and use it. There is a specific set of licenses that allow other users to share, remix and re-use the original work, give a look here.

What is the “flag as inappropriate” feature?

“Flag as inappropriate” is a feature of Koinup that allows members to report to us any work that they retain inappropriate. So, if you come across a work that offends you or that you retain infringes our terms of use, because it is indecent, pornographic, violent, etc., you can report it to us thanks to this feature.

How can I flag to you?

You will find the Flag as Inappropriate button beneath any work. So if you want to flag something, you simply have to click on the button and select the kind of infringement and send your indication to us.

Why do you suggest me to flag inappropriate works?

For two main reason. Firstly it is to your own advantage to keep Koinup clean and lawful. The second reason is that we increase ranking of members that flag us inappropriate works. But take care: we'll only increase your ranking if we agree that work signaled by you is genuinely inappropriate.

How do I know that you is going to increase my rank after a flag?

Once we receive your flag as inappropriate, we'll review the contested work and we'll send you an email upon this. To see if you ranking has been improved, check the members page and browse koinup members filtering by the coolest. Your position in the list should be better than before.

Who owns the content uploaded to Koinup?

Members retain ownership of their works. Koinup may host your works only for as long as you leave them up on our site. For more info about our terms of use, give a look here.
Take care that you are always free to distribute your works on other web sites or wherever you wish.

What about credits? Why does Koinup advise using them?

In our remix culture, people seldom create their own works from scratch. Usually they draw inspiration from someone else’s works or remix other ideas, or frequently they use tools and software created by others. Credits are acknowledgments of the other authors (or companies) which have made your art possible.
We suggest you include credits for the companies, authors, brands and ideas which have inspired your work or which you have used for your works. For example, if your work is based on a particular mod or mesh, we suggest to give its name and its author. Or if your machinima features skins created by another artist, we suggest you give the artist’s name. You could also write the url and other information useful to contact authors credited by you.

How can I insert credits in my works?

It's very easy to do. When uploading your works, fill the field credits and type in it the names of companies, authors, brands and ideas which have inspired your work or which you have used in making your work.
