Koinup

What is Koinup?

Koinup is a social network, online community and web portal dedicated to virtual worlds users.
On Koinup you can share your virtual life, manage your friends you have in virtual worlds, share photos and videos/machinima of your avatar and friends.
You can discover the best places of the virtual worlds and keep updated on the best things happening in virtual worlds.

Why do you call the website Koinup?

Koinup is a derivation of Koinè. Koinè is a term that ancient Greeks used to suggest a sort of esperanto they use to speach with foreign people. We at Koinup think that virtual worlds, games and metaverse are becoming the new esperanto. They allow people to socialize, communicate and express themselves, beyond nationalities, regions and countries. So we coined the term Koinup, which is the up-grade of Koinè. Koinup is the place where users could share their "other" lives and the creations they made in virtual environments.

Storyboard is for users who have long stories to tell. It's very easy to use and it allow to anyone who have some ideas to tell stories. It's something in the middle between pictures and videos. Pictures are very powerfull tool but they don't provide our members the chance to tell stories. Videos on the contrary are very difficult to use. Only a few user create cool movies or machinima. Storyboard is the synthesis of them, because it's a very easy but at the same time it's very powerfull tool to create stories.

When do you suggest me to use the storyboard media instead of pictures?

Storyboard could be used by authors who like to create comic-like stories inspired by their virtual lives.
It also could be used by authors who want to create and share tutorials. Think of Second Life users who want to share information about how they builded a particular object or piece of architecture.
Storyboard is also a powerful tool for machinima creators who want to create and/or share storyboards and mockups of their movies.
Virtual photographers could use storyboard when they want take several shots of an object (from several point of view)
Movies Directors can create storyboards before making movies. A storyboard helps them to visualize the story or to adapt a narrative for a movie. Our Koinup members can use the Storyboard media to sketch out storyboards for their upcoming movies, or they can use it to write screenplays/storyboards for other users, within collaborative projects.

Tags & Skills

What are tags?

Tags are labels you can assign to your works (videos, pictures, storyboards) that help you organize and remember them. Tags are not hierarchic keywords. You can assign as many tags to an item as you like. You can delete the tags later, too. You can use tags to describe the location, the idea, the people, the content, or the tools you used or refer to in your work. Tagging is a more flexible system of organization than preconceived categories or folders.
Here's a list of the most popular tags in Koinup.

What about tag fraud and what do you think about it?

Tag fraud is when a member uses popular but irrelevant keywords to describe their items in order to draw more traffic. This activity is not allowed on Koinup and we reserve the right to remove any non-relevant tags. Tag fraud makes it difficult for viewers to find the works they are looking for and diminishes the Koinup experience for everyone.
So we ask you to use only relevant keywords and to add as many tags as you think usefully improves the recognition of your work

What are skills?

Skills are tags that describe your profile in Koinup. Skill is a popular term in virtual world culture. Skills refer to the abilities of members. In Koinup, skills are tags you can use to describe your abilities, talents, and other things. Here, some examples of skills: 3dbuilding, scripting, coding, virtualphotography, design, clothing, socialnetworking, javascripting, html, etc. We have added skills to allow users to get together and find other creators who share similar skills and artistic talents. Skills are a new way of describing yourself.

How can I insert skills and how I can I delete them?

It's very easy. To add skills, please login, then enter in your personale homepage and click on "skills and profiles". Done this, type your skills and save. To delete skills, click on the "delete symbol" beside the skill you like to remove.

What is social tagging?

Social tagging is a tool that allows Koinup members to add tags to works uploaded by other members.
If you find an interesting work, or if you think that the creator has not managed to identify precisely what his or her work means, you can add your tags to it. This is likely to improve recognition of a work and add other viewpoints, beside that of the creator.
We think that the most important use of social tagging is to increase the awareness of a work. For example, if you find a work created in another language you can add tags in your language so the work will become recognizable for people from your country, too.

I have allowed other members to add social tags to my works. Where I can check if there is any new tag added to my items?

You can check them in the "recent activity on you" page and obviously you can check them in the works pages.

I'd like to add a social tag, but I don't want others to identify me. What can I do?

Social tagging is not anonymous. If you add a social tag, other users recognize your profile. They can give you feedback related to this. Don't forget that social tagging is for connecting people, not to isolate them.

Can I delete my social tags?

Yes, obviously. You can always delete the tags you post in Koinup. It doesn't matter if they are social or not.

What happens if I write the same tag in capital and in lowercase letter?

It doesn't matter. Koinup takes it as always being the same tag.

What is the tag cloud?

The tag cloud is a visual depiction of tags used within a website. More frequently-used tags are depicted in a larger font or otherwise emphasized, while the less frequently-used tags are depicted in a smaller one. You can browse Koinup by tags. For example, you can select the most frequent tags to see Koinup trends. But you can also see the tag cloud for any user.

Community

Can I keep private my items?

Koinup takes your privacy very seriously. For more info, give a look to our Privacy Policy. You can set your items to be visible or not. You can set the privacy status while uploading your works. You can make the works visible to your contacts only, too Nevertheless, we suggest that you share them with the community. The main purpose of Koinup is to share virtual generated contents and to create a suitable platform for them. We strongly suggest you think of Koinup as something more than a free hard disk. For more info give a look at our Guidelines.

Can I make my works visible only to my contacts?

Yes you can. We added a specific features to do it. To make the work visible only to your contact, please select this while uploading the work. If you would like to change the private setting once uploaded the work, you have go in the work page and change the private/public setting.

What happens to comments and tags added by other users, if I alter the setting of a previously public work to private? And what if someone has saved it as a favorite?

Tags and comments became invisible. At the same time the work doesn't feature anymore in the user's favorites.

CrossPost

What is CrossPost?

CrossPost is a new Koinup brand feature that allow you to upload your works at the same time in Koinup and in other websites, with only one click.
That is: you upload your works in Koinup and they will be automatically featured also in other websites.

Which are the websites where I can CrossPost my works?

At present you can CrossPost your works to Flickr and Twitter.
When you CrossPost your works to Flickr, they will be featured also in your Flickr pages. When you CrossPost your works to Twitter, their Koinup Url will be featured in your Twitter pages.

Which are the benefits of CrossPost?

The benefits are indeed really great! With this new Koinup brand feature you can keep updated your favourite accounts and pages with just one click.
Thanks to the CrossPost feature you don't have to upload your works in Koinup and then upload once more in Flickr.
Just upload them in Koinup and then they will go automatically to Flickr in a few minutes.
Regarding the CrossPost to Twitter, the benefit is that you don't have to update your Twitter page about what you are doing in Koinup. It is enought you upload a picture in Koinup and your Twitter page will be automatically updated.

How long does CrossPost take for a work from Koinup to Twitter and/or Flickr?

It usually take only a few minutes. So once you have posted your works in Koinup, wait some minutes before to check your account in Flickr or Twitter. But take care that it is possible that sometime it takes more time. It depends on several factors, but usually some minutes are enough.

What I have to do to CrossPost my works in Flickr and Twitter?

You have only to insert your Flickr upload email and your Twitter credentials in your Koinup account page.
You can find your Koinup account page in the head menu. To update your account insert your data and click on "Save changes".

What is the Flickr upload email?

Flickr upload email is the email address that Flickr creates for you on the purpose to upload pics to Flickr by email. You find it in the the Flickr account pages.
You can recognize it because the name in that email address is made up of two works separated by two digits
for example: xxxxxxx999yyyyyyy@photos.flickr.com
The Flickr upload email is not the email you used to create your account in Flickr. It is an email generated by Flickr on the purpose to upload pics on Flickr by email.

Can I CrossPost a story or a video from Koinup to other websites?

Unfortunately it's not possible at present. The Crosspost works only for pictures. Anyway, if you are a video maker, you can upload stills from your videos as pics and CrossPost them to Flickr and Twitter.

I updated my Flickr email address and Twitter credentials, but I don't want that these particularly pics I'm uploading now, will be sent to Twitter and/or Flick.
What can I do?

It's not a problem, you have to uncheck the CrossPost flag at the bottom of the upload page.

I just create a Flickr account for the purpose of CrossPost my works from Koinup.
I tried to CrossPost but it failed. What's happened?

When you create an account in Flickr, you can't upload pics by email for some time (approximately a day). So if you create a Flickr account for the purpose of CrossPost from Koinup, wait one day before starting to CrossPost from Koinup.
You can also try to send pics by your email account and check if Flickr is ready to accept pics from email.
If you are able to upload pics by email on Flickr, it means that you can also CrossPost pics from Koinup!

Can I CrossPost to Flickr all the formats accepted by Koinup (Jpeg Gif Png Bmp Tiff)?

You can CrossPost Jpeg Gif Png Tiff without any problem.
Instead it isn't possible to make CrossPost with BMP pics, cause Flickr doesn't accept this format by email upload. So we advise our users, mainly our members from Second Life, to change the format of the screenshots they took in Second Life before CrossPost them in Flickr.

Upload from Second Life: virtual broadcasting

What does it mean: "Upload from Second Life?"

It does mean that right now you can send contents directly from Second Life to your Koinup gallery, in only one click and without loggin' in Koinup.

Which are the benefits for the members?

The benefits are indeed great, because right now you can update your Koinup gallery without loggin' in koinup.com.
Moreover, now your pics and storyboards can reach Koinup with their slurl, so you can teleport in the same place where the pictures have been taken and join your friends inworld!

What is a slurl?

Slurl is a Second Life map address. Each pics uploaded on Koinup directly from Second Life will come with its own slurl, so you can teleport exactly in the same place!

Can I see if there are other pics on Koinup from the same place?

Sure, you can! Beside each contents uploaded on Koinup directly from the Second Life client, there is a link to see other pics from the same place.

Which kind of content can I upload from Second Life to Koinup?

You can upload directly from the SL client both pictures and storyboards.
Storyboard is a collection of pictures. You can use it to create real time reportage or journals, broadcast Second Life events and parties when you are inworld.

How can I send a postcard directly from the Second Life client to Koinup?

We made an easy blog tutorial, read here.

What's about the "upload email address"?

The "upload email address" is the email address we provide for each Koinup member in order to upload contents directly from Second Life to their Koinup gallery. You can find this email address in your account page.
To upload contents from Second Life to Koinup, copy this email address and paste it in the Recipient's Email field inside the Second Life "Snapshots Preview".

How can I insert title and description on my pics?

It's very easy. Once taken the snapshot, click on "send" to open the email snapshot pop up.
In the email snapshot pop up, you can type the title in the subject line.
While for the description, you have to write it in the field "message".

How can I add some tags to postcards sent directly from Second Life to Koinup?

To add tags, follow these instructions. Once taken the snapshot, click on "send" to open the email snapshot pop up. Then, in the "message", at first hyphen, then on a new line, type "tag: " followed by the tags you wanna add for that pic.
This is an example: tag: sl secondlife svarga "my adventure"

How can I upload a whole storyboard from SL to Koinup?

It is not hard to do. You have to follow the same steps of the pics.
The only difference is that you have to choose one label for each of your storyboards and enclose it in square brackets at the very beginning of subject.

Can you explain me better?

Sure, please follow these instructions.
If you choose the label "gallery" and the title of the storyboard is "adventure in Svarga", then in the snapshot subject line you have to type:

[gallery] adventure in Svarga

Please, type the same content:

[gallery] adventure in Svarga

in the subject of all the pics you wanna include in the same storyboard.

Anyway, we created a tutorial on how to upload storyboards directly from SL to Koinup. Here's the link.

How long does it take for a pic to be featured on my gallery once sent from Second Life?

It depends on many factors. Usually it does take only 10-15 minutes. But sometimes, it could take more time. So if you don't see the pictures on Koinup after some minutes you sent them, check it out later.

I sent a pic from SL to Koinup more than an hour ago, but it's not yet in my gallery. What's the problem?

There are two main reason for that failure. The first reason is that you made some error while typing your upload email address. The second reason is there has been some technical problems. If this is the case you should have received a mail from us, reporting the upload failure.

Can I set my contents as private or visible only to my contacts?

Of course, if you wanna set your contents private,
please add: +private in your upload email address before the '@'. This is how your upload email address will looks like:
YourUsername.somechar+private@post.koinup.com

To make the contents visible only to your contacts, add: +contacts to your upload email address before the '@'.
This is how your upload email address will looks like:
YourUsername.somechar+contacts@post.koinup.com

Can I CrossPost my Second Life contents to Flickr and Twitter?

Of course. So right now, you can broadcast your stuffs directly from Second Life to your Koinup without login and automatically we will send them to your Flickr and Twitter page.
Now you can kill 3 birds with only a stone!

I don't want that some of my pics will be CrossPosted to Flickr. What can I do?

You can disabled CrossPosting; to do it, please add: -crosspost to your upload email address before the '@'.
It will looks like something similar to this one:
YourUsername.somechar-crosspost@post.koinup.com

Can I crosspost my storyboard?

Each single image of your storyboard will be CrossPosted.

Does this virtual uploading system work only for Second Life?

The postcard system works also for There.com. You can view a Tutorial on how to send postcards from There to Koinup here .
We are also talking with other virtual worlds for expanding the postcard tool to all the metaverse. Stay tuned with our blog.

Places

What's Koinup Places?

The Places Project is our way of collecting the mass of slurls and locations daily posted by Koinup members. We wanna help you guys both to discover cool places and to share your fav Virtual Destinations with others!

Which are the virtual worlds supported in the Places Section?

Currently only Second Life is supported and you can view on that area only places from Second Life. But we'd like to expand the area to other virtual worlds.

Can I contribute to the Places?

Sure, you can! Its very easy, you have only to add the exact slurl to your Koinup items. If you took the photo in a certain location, well you can add that SLurl on Koinup, while uploading this photo. Remember to put the SLurl in the location box. This way your photo will enter in the places pool.

Is there a faster way to add places on Koinup?

Yes, you can send a postcard. If you send a postcard from Second Life to Koinup, the SLurl will be automatically attached to the photo and the item will enter the places pool automatically.

How can I send a postcard from Second Life?

We made a quick tutorial that will explain it in a couple of minutes, take a look here.

Groups Guidelines

If you are an admin of a Koinup Group, here are some suggestions for making a great group:

Invite your friends and anyone you know who is interested in what you are interested in. Having group members is the first step in having a successful group!

Visit the group frequently. Groups thrive with daily discussion, and with daily responses from other members of the community, in chat and on the discussion boards.

Let other people help you, by promoting members as moderators or even administrators. And with their help moderate your group, help people to understand the intent of the group, encourage them to post and remove works from the pool if they won't be appropriate with your rules

Manage Members and Behaviours If a member does something inappropriate with your internal rules, at first please invite him to adjust his behaviour, if he persist you can remove. If will join again and continue to disturb your community, you're authorized to ban him. But please pay attention, the banning a member is drastic measure, use it only if necessary.

Keep updated your members, using the Group Notices, if someone joined your group probably is interested in your stuffs, so if you'are the admin well it could be very useful to keep your members updated on the group life, by sending them group notices.

Create a Forum. Groups are not only for videos and images, you can use them also for creating forums. Remember that you can set your group to allow only threads and not works. So if you want a forum group, use this feature and encourage people to open thread and launch topics. You can also make sticky the most important topics on your area.

Run your own contest. You can use the group to launch contests and competitions. Some tips to do it: type the rules of the contest in "About" section of the group, close the pool once finished the time for submissions, inform participants of the announcement by sending a group notice.

Be respectful with your member. Consider the group you admin your community on Koinup. Keep it clean, help and encourage new members to enter and enjoy the community!

What about credits? Why does Koinup advise using them?

In our remix culture, people seldom create their own works from scratch. Usually they draw inspiration from someone else's works or remix other ideas, or frequently they use tools and software created by others. Credits are acknowledgments of the other authors (or companies) which have made your art possible.
We suggest you include credits for the companies, authors, brands and ideas which have inspired your work or which you have used for your works. For example, if your work is based on a particular mod or mesh, we suggest to give its name and its author. Or if your machinima features skins created by another artist, we suggest you give the artist's name. You could also write the url and other information useful to contact authors credited by you.

How can I insert credits in my works?

It's very easy to do. When uploading your works, fill the field credits and type in it the names of companies, authors, brands and ideas which have inspired your work or which you have used in making your work.
