1. You can use the "1/3 rule" that photographers use. Think of the space as divided into thirds, not halves; align your subjects a third of the way into the image, not perfectly centered. Centered = boring. 2. Don't put a border around your wallpaper, and try to keep anything important (especially text) away from the top and the bottom of the wallpaper; 3. Also keep important detail away from the right and left edges of the wallpaper, or it'll have icons in front of it. 4. Focus on one or two characters in your wallpaper. Keep the subject simple and clear. 5. Use light and delicate colors and tone. Remember: wallpapers are displayed with icons, and UI so you should use only delicate and soft colors.
