California Legacy in SL - Episode1: Bunker Hill by Raymond Chandler
Imagine what we'd think of California if Toshio Mori had never written his gentle short stories about life in Oakland's "Lil' Yokohama", Walter Nordhoff had never hidden behind his alter-ego Señor Don Juan Obrigon to tell the tale of "The Journey of the Flame" or Bayard Taylor had never transformed his gold rush journalism into the compelling chronicle Eldorado. It's pretty easy to do, of course, since all of these essential works of Californiana have long been out of print. No wonder East Coast elites like Woody Allen think there's no culture here. The California Legacy Project aims to change that perception. Combining the resources of California's oldest university and one of California's most respected publishers, the series has now more than thirty books in print and continues to raise public awareness and appreciation for California's cultural legacy. With close to 500 segments streaming online and being broadcast on public radio stations around the country, the CLP has now entered the world of Second Life, determined to add a compelling visual component to the audio excerpts. The sets can be visited on Santa Clara Island anytime. Contact SCU Shepherd in world for further information. This first episode is an excerpt from Raymond Chandler's 1942 novel "The High Window".
