All is not always well in SL photography. There are problems that crop up. You should be aware of these common and not so common problems.
Sometimes glow can kill the look of a picture. Look at the model's ankles.
In this case, the solution was to go to the graphics preferences and turn off Basic Shaders.
Sometimes neither having Basic Shaders on nor off works very well. In this case you have to deal with it in post-processing.
This image combines the two previous images as layers. The layer flooded with too much glow is made the top layer and its Layer Mode set to soft light. This adds SOME of the glow without overpowering the model.

Night scenes can have these beautiful, fluffy clouds. But when you turn on Atmospheric Shaders to get the clouds, you also get this band of what above the horizon.
Get rid of horizon problem, and your beautiful clouds are gone. Either shoot high enough that you don't see the horizon, or do a lot of post-processing to fix it.
There are some ground textures that look aweful when Basic Shaders are off.
The solution? Turn on Basic Shaders. Notice that you fix some problems by turning Basic Shaders on and some by turning Basic Shaders off. Better hope you don't have both problems in the same picture.

What you see is NOT always what you get. This picture was taken at an ice skating party. Everything looked fine on the screen, but when I looked at the pictures I had taken, my feet were buried in the ice. In this shot I had lifted one leg foot enough to see the skate.
Do spot checks of your pictures as you are shooting.

Sometimes SL is just weird. Notice the black square under the umbrella light. I found no way to make them go away. And as I moved the camera around, they would come and go and change shapes.
In this picture, we also have an example of "alpha channel conflict." This happens where two or more textures with some kind of transparency to them are layered over each other. The window texture has transparent glass. The spotlight umbrellas are partially transparent. SL has trouble deciding which one is in front of the other.
