Nighthawks
A recreation of Edward Hopper's iconic 20th century American painting dealing with themes of isolation and the emptiness of modern urban life. Here reconstructed in Second Life and brought to life in this short film to explore how those themes can be further developed through the medium of machinima. I built the Diner and street corner as a set for this film over a two to three week period. I had an opportunity to imagine all the elements that are out of view from the painters perspective, but I kept it minimal to preserve a desolate, somewhat dehumanising feel. I wanted enough to hold the viewers eye but also retain a sense of alienation that I think is key to the original painting.
