35 Millimeter
This image of a 35mm slide is a subject I have attempted before but this time with much more detail and verité to the appearence of actual photographic film. I modified the film stock name to '100SL' as an intentional nod to Second Life of course. This image started life as one of my favourite SL photographs, the unmodified version can be seen here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/planetvideo/2081086848/sizes/o/ I used Photoshop to transform it to black and white and to build the 35mm frame. The frame is just a dark border. I selected a ablong area to become a sprocket hole and smooted the selection to give the rounded corners, then I copied the selection 8 times for the top endge and the bottom edge, as an alpha channel, using guides to line them up. When they were perfect I selected that alpha channel and used it to cookie cut the 16 sprocket holes from the border. Then I typed the slide numbers (5) and film stock name and scaled and positioned them authentically. I then used various transform operations to tilt, rotate and modify the perspective. Meanwhile I built up a 'wood' texture by stretching an old paper texture and applying it to a large prim and then angling it for a another shot which gave me the final wooden surface. Next I composited the two elements together. I also used a variation of the slide to build a mask for creating the shadow of the slide on the table top. Lastly I adjusted the overall transparency of the slide to reveal both the grain of the table, and some subtle highlights and shadows cast by the sprocket holes underneath the slide that can just be discerned from the view above.
