Astraya and Athamas

Thankyou Franzael for the nice evening we spent chatting ;)

Nice shot! And thanks to you, too, dear. ...oh, and by the way, he's called Athamas. ;-) Although it sounds much to WoWish, it is actually a name from Dante Alighieri's "Divina Commedia".

« Nel tempo che Iunone era corrucciata
per Semelè contra 'l sangue tebano,
come mostrò una e altra fiata,
Atamante divenne tanto isano,
che veggendo la moglie con due figli
andar carcata da ciascuna mano,
gridò: "Tendiam le reti, sì ch'io pigli
la leonessa e ' leoncini al varco;
(Inferno XXX, 1 - 8)

And he belongs to Ancient Greek mithology as well! ^_^ King Athamas!
He was the king of Boeotian city Orchomenus, married to Nephele goddess of clouds. He had he Phrixus and Helle from that marriage. But Athamas abandoned Nephele and married Ino, from whom he had Learchus and Melicertes. Ino hated Phrixus and Helle and she managed to get rid of them inducing Athamas to believe the sacrifice of Phrixus was a necessary measure to help his reign to survive famine! Athamas agreed but a flying golden ram ( oh, my! ^_^ ) sent by Nephele rescued Helle and Phrixius just in time... Well... Helle felt off and died into the sea which took her name ( Hellespont ) but Phrixius survived and got shelter in Colchis! Boys always had a second opportunity in ancient mithology... So Phrixius was helped by King Aeëtes and married his daughter. In esxhange for such hospitality he gave Aeëtes the famous golden fleece of the helping flying ram.
It became an amulet to his kingdom and was hung on a tree... Later on Jason asked for the golden fleece together with the Argonauts... But this is just another story! ^_^

Hate drove Ino's mind again and again but when she helped Dionysus ( her nephew, son of Semele ) in conquering the throne she did a great mistake. Well Hera did not approve such a behaviour and  made Athamas insane and furious and caused him to slay his poor son Learchus. Athamas was not a loving daddy, indeed. To escape his fury Ino threw herself and Melicertes into the sea... They survived!
And... What happened to Athamas? He was guilty of his son's murder and had to run away from his homeland repairing in a savage place, Phthiotis in Thessaly, among raging beasts. The place where he was rescued by wolves was called Athamanian plain from that moment on and there Athamas married ( again??? ) Themisto. Oh, boy... Athamas came back to Ino's. Obviously the two wifes didn't appreciate such a close contact between his two families. Themisto wished revenge but Ino, knowing Themisto used to dress her sons in white while Ino's dressed in black, switched their clothes without Themisto's knowledge, and so she killed her own children... O.O Bloody myth, wasn't it?

Which is the lesson? If you manage to get married, try to do it once and forever, never mess with flying sheeps and stay away from the sea!

@LamB: Wow! That's some knowledge of ancient telenovelas, you got there! My greatest respect. It is always good to know such stories. So thanks for sharing it. I'm not sure, though, after reading the story if I had chosen the name Athamas had I known. Sounds much too wicked for my nice little Draenei...

Lol! Ancient Mythology can become very, very intricate! Don't worry for your Draenei, since Athamas was a good guy before becoming insane! Well, and Arthas was a good guy too... Before loosing his mind! O.O Just keep your Athamas  away from jealous wives and golden rams, this way he'll be safe! ;)
