Achernar è la nona stella più luminosa del cielo, ed è visibile principalmente dall'emisfero sud della Terra, dove appare come un astro molto isolato, in un campo di stelle deboli e molto lontano dalla brillante scia chiara della Via Lattea, il nome deriva dalla parola araba آخر النهر (ākhir an-nahr) che significa "fine del fiume", e si tratta di una delle stelle più luminose e solitarie della volta celeste.
