Pink Blossoms

Mark was a 27 year old man when he decided he wanted to be the person on the outside, that he always believed he really was on the inside...Marci, a woman. He started hormone therapy, intense counseling, and he became a client of mine as well. I'm a therapist and I work with adults who have disabilities that can impact their lives.

Mark had his name legally changed to Marci. It was amazing to watch Marci change too. She developed breasts and had minor surgery to shave her adam's apple. She let her hair grow and gradually began to go out dressed as the woman she always felt she was. She had wonderful fashion sense and she loved pink! I remember her bringing me pink blossoms from a cherry tree in her yard. She loved to bring me flowers...always pink.

I really liked her and we grew close. We spent many hours talking, laughing, and even crying together. Her transition was difficult and costly; it cost her the family she loved who could not accept the change. It cost her friends and her job that she had had for 5 years. It cost her the son she had fathered from her marriage, when she was still living as a man. Nothing about Mark's transition to Marci was easy. She had days when depression was her only companion, yet she never doubted her decision.

The last time I saw her she looked lovely. She was dressed in a pretty pink dress with matching pink heels. She wore a gold necklace and earrings with tiny pink blossoms hanging delicately from them; her makeup was perfect. She looked beautiful, and she was smiling from ear to ear; she seemed happy. She was entering the last phase of her transition and was really excited for that day to come. Her time with me was finished; we had spent a year in weekly visits. We hugged as I wished her happiness and she left my office for the last time. That was 15 months ago.

Yesterday I heard that Marci had committed suicide.

She was one of the kindest people I have every known. She would never hurt anyone intentionally, yet people hurt her all the time with cruel remarks and hateful looks...people who didn't know her at all. She suffered in her short life, wanting only to be the person she always felt she was and needing people to love her for who she was. I don't know what happened to Marci that led to her death; perhaps it was an accumulation of the sadness and pain she experienced every day while trying to reach her dream.

Free will is what defines us and human beings and we are suppose to have that right. We are suppose to be protected from hate and cruelty, but Marci was never able to enjoy that protection. Now she is gone and her gentle smile and caring heart will be missed by many. The world was a better place with Marci in it.

I'm so sorry, Lanay.  This is a beautiful tribute to Marci and so many others like her who are dealing with unspeakable internal pain.

The good times and the compassion you shared with Marci were moments of relief for her...a gift of immeasurable value in the midst of turmoil. Now those moments of joy and your memories of her valiant struggle can live in you...always. Well done, dear Lanay...and, peace to you, Marci.

I want, I hope, that through our art, our photos...we can perhaps make a change in the hearts of others...maybe we can cause just one person to think before they act and in doing so, make a difference in our world.  Thank you all for your comments and kindness...Marci would have liked all of you.

My prayers and sympathy (hug).  My generation started the good work back in the Sixties, but we never finished it, and the world still has to learn toleration.

Hi Lanay, I work about legal rights for disabled persons, and Im very touched about what you said about Marci. So many persons suffer, and it's so unfair.
