These are the particularities of World of the Litch King!
Quests, dungeons, show you the main characters of the story... sometimes they don't kill you (like in Pinnacle where the Litch King leaves the work to another NPC), but not always ^__^
In one of the first quests in Howling Fjiord, you meet Arthas and he stuns you... he speaks then and tells that it's not the moment to destroy you because you have to become stronger first, to be useful to him hehe then he kills you :-)

Ahahah, nice story, Arow!!! Knowing you as well as I do, I can perfectly imagine the situation, even if I wasn't there....
Surely your poor slave Grifis was sobbing and fighting the enemy NPC (the one who attacks you and even kills you :P ), while you were nicely busy in staring at Arthas... eheheheh, am I right, darlin'? XD
